The foundation
The Plastics Additives museum has been founded in 1998 by the family of Dr. Michael Rosenthal in tribute of Baerlocher' s 175th anniversary.
At present Lingen is the biggest production site worldwide among Baerlocher and has therefore been chosen as the location for the museum.
In creating the museum for plastics additives, Baerlocher takes on a special cultural task: The demonstration of the industrial production as a historical process and the documentation of the history and future of the additive production and the plastics involved.
The aim of the museum is to show the visitors in a permanent exhibition as well as in different special shows the important role of plastics in our life and also the great importance of additives within the production of plastics.
One main point has been focused on the plastic PVC, which has been criticised for the last years. A detailed discussion about the environmental sustainability of the material PVC gives the visitor an objective view of the current situation.
With the formation of the museum a foundation for a collection was laid. Main points were focused on the documentation of the industrial history and the production of Baerlocher and PVC products and end products.
Thanks to our customers we could find some rare pieces of former PVC products, among them were for example old PVC pipes, which were installed in an apartment house in Bitterfeld in 1936/37.
After analysing these pipes, we found out that their material had an excellent long-time behaviour.
Hans Weber KG from Kronach sponsored a historical extruder, which is an example for a machine that is used in the plastics industries all time. While the collection of the museum is more focused on PVC products, other samples of different plastics will be seen as yearly changing loans. This exhibition could only be realized through the support and collaboration with the Kunststoffmuseumsverein Düsseldorf.
